On one occasion the Blessed One was staying in Rajagaha, on Vulture Peak Mountain. Then Sutavan the wanderer went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, exchanged courteous greetings with him. After an exchange of friendly greetings & courtesies, he sat to one side. As he was sitting there, he said to the Blessed One:

Một thời, Thế Tôn trú ở Ràjagaha, tại núi Gijjhakùta. Rồi du sĩ Sutavà đi đến Thế Tôn, sau khi đến nói với Thế Tôn những lời chào đón hỏi thăm, sau khi nói lên những lời chào đón hỏi thăm thân hữu liền ngồi xuống một bên. Ngồi xuống một bên, du sĩ Sutavà và bạch Thế Tôn;

One day recently when I was staying right here in Rajagaha, at Giribbaja, I heard it in the Blessed One's presence, learned it in the Blessed One's presence:

Bạch Thế Tôn, có một thời con trú ở Ràjagaha, tại Giribbaja. Tại đây, bạch Thế Tôn, con có nghe từ miệng Thế Tôn, con có chấp nhận từ miệng Thế Tôn:

Sutavan, an Arahant monk whose mental fermentations are ended, who has reached fulfillment, done the task, laid down the burden, attained the true goal, totally destroyed the fetter of becoming, and who is released through right gnosis, cannot possibly transgress these five principles.

Này Sutavà, Tỷ-kheo nào là bậc A-la-hán, đã tận các lậu hoặc, đã thành tựu viên mãn, việc nên làm đã làm, đã đặt gánh nặng xuống, mục đích đã đạt được, hữu kiết sử đã đoạn tận, chơn chánh giải thoát; vị ấy không có thể làm năm sự:

It is impossible for a monk whose mental fermentations are ended to intentionally deprive a living being of life.

Tỷ-kheo đã đoạn tận các lậu hoặc không có thể có ý đoạt mạng sống của loài hữu tình.

It is impossible for a monk whose mental fermentations are ended to take, in the manner of stealing, what is not given.

Tỷ-kheo đã đoạn tận các lậu hoặc, không có thể lấy của không cho, được gọi là ăn trộm.

It is impossible for a monk whose mental fermentations are ended to engage in sexual intercourse.

Tỷ-kheo đã đoạn tận các lậu hoặc, không có thể hành dâm dục.

It is impossible for a monk whose mental fermentations are ended to tell a conscious lie.

Tỷ-kheo đã đoạn tận các lậu hoặc, không có thể biết mà nói láo.

It is impossible for a monk whose mental fermentations are ended to consume stored-up sensual things as he did before, when he was a householder.

Tỷ-kheo đã đoạn tận các lậu hoặc, không có thể hưởng thọ các dục do các đồ cất chứa đem lại, như trước còn làm gia chủ.

Now, did I hear this rightly from the Blessed One? Did I learn it rightly, attend to it rightly, understand it rightly?"

Bạch Thế Tôn, như vậy không biết con có khéo nghe, khéo nắm giữ, khéo tác ý, khéo thọ trì lời Thế Tôn dạy hay không?

Yes, Sutavan, you heard it rightly, learned it rightly, attended to it rightly, & understood it rightly. Both before & now I say to you that an arahant monk whose mental fermentations are ended, who has reached fulfillment, done the task, laid down the burden, attained the true goal, totally destroyed the fetter of becoming, and who is released through right gnosis, cannot possibly transgress these nine principles.

Thật vậy, này Sutavà, như vậy Thầy đã khéo nghe, khéo nắm giữ, khéo tác ý, khéo thọ trì. Xưa kia, và cả nay nữa, này Sutavà, Ta đã nói như sau: "Tỷ-kheo nào là bậc A-la-hán, đã đoạn tận các lậu hoặc, đã thành tựu viên mãn, việc nên làm đã làm, đã đặt gánh nặng xuống, mục đích đã đạt được, hữu kiết sử đã đoạn tận, chơn chánh giải thoát, vị ấy không có thể vi phạm chín sự:

[9] It is impossible for a monk whose mental fermentations are ended to follow a bias based on delusion.

Tỷ-kheo đã đoạn tận các lậu hoặc không có thể đi đến si.

Both before and now I say to you that an arahant monk whose mental fermentations are ended, who has reached fulfillment, done the task, laid down the burden, attained the true goal, totally destroyed the fetter of becoming, and who is released through right gnosis, cannot possibly transgress these nine principles.

Xưa kia và cả nay nữa, Ta nói như sau: "Tỷ-kheo đã thành tựu viên mãn, việc nên làm đã làm, đã đặt gánh nặng xuống, mục đích đã đạt được, hữu kiết sử đã đoạn tận, chơn chánh giải thoát; vị ấy không có thể vi phạm chín sự".
